Complex -It was all a joke, allegedly. The rumor of impending beef between Eminem and Drake over the Joe Budden situation, as forecasted by Hot 97’s Ebro on Ebro in the Morning, fueled hours of conversation on Twitter before Ebro declared the rumor a joke at almost 9 p.m. on Wednesday evening.
Drake vs. Eminem. Arguably the most popular rapper on the planet vs. one of the greatest rappers of all time. I know this is probably a joke and this idea was drawn up to bring some attention to start a “potential feud.” Who would win?
NOTE: I want to say that I am one of the whitest people ever so hip hop is not my strong suit. Dr. Dre, Kanye West, and Eminem are probably my favorite rappers ever. I honestly don’t listen to enough rap so I am NO expert, but I have listened to both artists so I feel like I can judge them fairly.
If we are comparing rapping abilities, this is not even a debate. Eminem will blow Drake out of the water. It would not even be close. Eminem is one of the greatest lyricists of all time and that’s #Facts. All you need to do is listen to Stan (my favorite Eminem song) and you will bow down to Slim’s greatness. Nothing can touch early Slim Shady. His delivery, the anger behind his voice, the people he went after. He truly gave no fucks.
Then, there’s Drake. Wheel Chair Jimmy. The man with the first name of Aubrey. October’s Very Own. Any outsider can tell you that Drake is not even in the same playing field as Eminem when it comes to rapping. That being said, I don’t hate Drake. I actually think the dude is talented. Drake is a good entertainer. He did a surprisingly good job on SNL. He’s very charismatic and has a likable charm to him when he does interviews on TV.
I really enjoyed Drake’s first album, Thank Me Later, and I even liked his follow up, Take Care. Really don’t care that much for the rest of his albums. He has some hits for sure. The guy makes catch radio songs and I can’t deny that. The same can be said for Eminem. Some say Eminem has lost a step or has gotten soft with age. Some people argue that Eminem hasn’t made a good album in over 10 years, which I can understand to an extent. That being said, I’ll put The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Matters LP, and The Eminem Show over anything Drake has ever done.
The only advantage Drake has over Eminem is his experience with “today’s rap battles.” Social media plays a big part in these and there’s no denying the fact that Drake has skill when it comes to diss tracks in today’s society. Just ask Meek Mill. Drake DESTROYED Meek Mill in their brief battle. He went after Meek and he went after him hard. Plus, Drake has more fans than Eminem today so Drake might have social media’s support.
After all the smoke has cleared, there can only be one winner and I think this is an easy decision:Eminem. Marshall Matters. The Real Slim Shady. Drake has rap battle experience today, but if he ever dissed Eminem, it would be the biggest mistake of his life. Old Slim would come out. The old Slim who went after N’Sync and Brittany Spears. The old Eminem who had so much hatred and anger behind every bar he rapped. The one thing that Eminem would have a field on is Drake’s (rumored) ghostwriting. Eminem would not stand for this. A guy who prides himself on lyrics. To have someone else write for you goes against everything Eminem stands for. Game, Set, and Match.
P.S. If this was a freestyle battle, Eminem wins in a landslide. As 50 Cent would say, “Whoever you feel is the best black artist and stand them face to face in a room with Em, Em would eat that shit alive.” 50 also said he would put everything he has on Eminem in a rap battle. THAT SHIT MEATLOAF
