The A.V. Club – But while Furious 7 provided touching closure for the Furious family, co-star Vin Diesel apparently feels there’s more of O’Conner’s story to tell. According toScreenCrush, Diesel spoke at length to Caleb and Cody Walker about the possibility of returning their brother to the franchise in some form: “I had a phone call with Vin for about an hour and we really discussed this a while back. He wanted [our] blessing,” Caleb said, noting that Diesel wanted to know when it “would be acceptable to maybe bring Paul’s character back… to really kind of let his fans know he’s still out there.”
The Fast and Furious movies continue to age like a fine wine. They somehow keep getting better as the years go by. One day, I will go in depth of my rankings. Off the top of my head, I would go (from best to worst): 5, 1, 7, 6, 4, 2, 3. They are classic action movies with cool car chases with completely unrealistic action sequences but hey, that’s totally fine with me.
This is an interesting move to say the least. For those who didn’t Furious 7, that was Paul Walker’s swan song (RIP). They wrote him off the best way they could. I was totally fine with what they did. Plus, See You Again had its run as my favorite song ever. I might tear up just watching it again.
That being said, I DO NOT LIKE THIS MOVE AT ALL. There’s no easy way to say this, but Paul Walker is not with us anymore. They wrote off his character and that’s that. Now if we’re talking about a brief cameo just to check in to see how he’s doing or if it’s for a quick flashback sequence, I’ll live with it. But if Brian O’Connor is a major player in movies down the line, I am not about that life. If they really want to bring back Brian O’Connor, they should have one of his real life brothers play “Brian’s long lost brother” in the movie and he joins the team to replace Brian. That is another scenario I could live with, but even that sounds cheesy. It’s a really tricky situation because you know there would be some backlash for using CGI on a person who died. I say leave it as is and just finish up the series without Officer Brian O’Connor. Paul Walker is irreplaceable so I think we should keep it that way.
April and Fast 8 can’t come soon enough.
