Looking Back On Kanye West’s Masterpiece ‘MBDTF’ 6 Years After Its Release

In what’s been a sad week for Kanye West fans spanning the globe, I wanted to reflect on how much My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy means to me, a true hip-hop masterpiece, with so many geniuses infused into one project. Yeezy was not in the good graces of society since his 2009 VMAs incident where he interrupted Taylor Swift, he knew he had to give the people what they wanted on this project. Kanye created “Rap Camp” flying out the best minds in music to Hawaii where he recorded most of what people call Ye’s best all-around work.

‘MBDTF’ dropped when I was a senior in high-school, a great time in my life as I celebrated essentially a victory lap before going on to college. After 808’s And Heartbreak changed the landscape of hip-hop, I had no idea what to expect from Dark Fantasy. Leading up to the album, Kanye being the creative genius he is, released G.O.O.D Fridays with new tracks every week leading into the project, which were absolute fire and a strategy that was never done before. Man, I need those to come back.

P.S. I had no idea Kanye performed at the Thanksgiving Day Parade until recently, can we make dope shit like that happen more often. The fact he chose this song and wore those clothes couldn’t be any more Kanye being Kanye.

The 39-year-old’s 5th studio album sold 496,000 units in the first week and was quickly rose to critical acclaim, notching album of the year honors from multiple publications such as; Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. Just look at the all-star lineup of artists that were involved in the making of the magnum opus: Raekwon, RZA, Pusha T, Rick Ross, Charlie Wilson, Big Sean, Cyhi the Prynce, Swizz Beatz, Dwele, Nicki Minaj, T.I., Drake, Teyana Taylor,Common, Jay-Z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, John Legend, Fergie, Rihanna, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Elton John, M.I.A., Justin Vernon, Seal, Beyoncé, Kid Cudi, Mos Def, and Alicia Keys.

The project was powered by smash hit singles like “Monster” where Nicki Minaj gave the verse of her career, “Power” as Kanye emitted his larger than life aura, “All Of The Lights” assisted by Kid Cudi, Rihanna and Elton John could end up being one of his most remembered tracks ever, the euphoric “Runaway” where Kanye insisted Pusha T use “more douchebag” making him re-record his verse 4-times on the somber track.

It is very rare that the first time listening to a project front to back I have a feeling one way or the other, especially with how many layers are featured on a West project, but My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was different. The album features a perfect aesthetic, and on the first listen I knew this was something special. Kanye did it again, he was right. As he usually is, I look up to the sky with a smile on my face knowing the haters are going to be handed another L.

6 yrs ago today I was apart of one of the greatest hip hop albums ever. You invited me to Hawaii and said “pick whatever tracks you love and write to all of them.” I got greedy, I stopped going to play basketball with you every morning and proceeded to write to 8 songs on your album. U kept me on 2, “Runaway” which was your platinum single, and “So Appalled” which put me on a song with you, Hov, Cyhi, Swizz, and produced by Rza. Thinking back on it, it really was all a set up. You were setting me up to be the solo artist I never saw myself as. So on the 6th anniversary of MBDTF and as the President of your label G.O.O.D. music I wanna say thanx for the endless opportunities you have brought to me. P.S. I think it’s time we all head back to Hawaii @kanyewest ::whenever you ready:: #GOOD

You’re not human if ‘Blame Game’ and ‘Lost In The World’ don’t bring tears to your eyes, I’ve never experienced such highs and lows of emotion in 68-minutes of euphonious cinema.

‘MBDTF’ became the anthem for my senior year of high-school and will always be synonymous with good times in my life. After giving me and other fans so much, I just want to thank you. I may not even be a music journalist if it weren’t for your music catalogue and inspiration.

As Kanye West battles his own issues, running himself into the ground as a servant to the community, let’s reciprocate and send those good vibes and prayers his way. Kanye was there for us when we needed him the most, aiding in relief to get through tough times, inspiring us to want better along the way.

I stand by my hero. #PrayForKanye
